Water Quality and Lake Health: We track this by taking water samples from each lake from May through September. Analysis of water chemistry enables us to monitor trends in lake health over time. Watershed protection: We work with property owners to assess runoff and erosion conditions to in order to facilitate remediate of issues that could allow excessive algae growing nutrients to enter any of our lakes. This significant effort involves applying for grant funding to help defray remediation costs. The generosity of our supporters has enabled LAON to also institute a self-funded grant program to go beyond grant availability. More information is available at these links:

Invasive Species: There are two types. The most concerning type is aquatic invasive species, which primarily live under water. To prevent this problem, we instituted a Courtesy Boat Inspection program that deploys inspectors to the Lake Pennesseewassee boat launch.,
our most visited lake. There, with boater concurrence, our inspectors check for any plants “hitchhiking” on a boat or trailer and make boaters aware of the need for them to inspect their boats. To further reduce our risk, we also hire lake scientists to check each of our lakes for any aquatic invasive species that might have made their way in. The third safeguard is our Invasive Plant Patrol (IPP) team of volunteers who survey their lake each year, also looking for plants that don’t belong. Fortunately, our efforts to date have been able to keep aquatic invasive species out.
The other type is Shoreline Invasive Species. These grow along or near the shore and live mostly on land. LAON has team of volunteers who remove these plants wherever possible. More information is available at these links:
